There are many references in the Bible that reveal your body is a temple and how you should treat it as one:
1 Corinthians 10:31: So whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20: Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.
1 Corinthians 3:16: Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Matthew 6: 22-23: The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness.
Proper nutrition is the key to maintaining a healthy body. It feeds our cells, organs, and bones and keeps our immune system strong. When we don’t provide key nutrients our systems can become weak and fall prey to disease.
When I was battling my tick infections, I put myself on a strict diet by eliminating processed foods, sugar and caffeine. The naturopathic doctor recommended whole foods and organic chicken and other meats to fuel my immune system. The tick parasites feed on candida and sugar so by cutting that out of my diet, it was another way of starving the infections out of my body.
It can be overwhelming when you read about all the fad diets and trends. In my opinion, anything that is grown from God’s green Earth was meant for our consumption. He already knew what our bodies (temples) needed and had provided it all. Sadly, there is a push for injecting our foods with more hormones, artificial chemicals and dyes, and preservatives and that can cause all sorts of negative impacts to our bodies.
Just to give you an idea on how diet trends can change so quickly, here are some trends on how some foods went from being bad for you to good for you.
- Eggs: In 1977, the government concluded that the high cholesterol in eggs was linked to high cholesterol levels in the blood and heart disease. Now studies within the past 20 years have found that high cholesterol levels in the blood are not linked with dietary cholesterol in foods such as eggs, chicken and shellfish. Eggs are now elated for having high protein, healthy fats and an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.
- Raw Nuts: The British Journal of Nutrition concluded that eating raw nuts, once considered bad for your because of their high fat and calorie count, actually slashes your risk of death from any cardiovascular diseases. Raw nuts are praised for their excellent sources for protein, healthy fats and minerals.
- Butter: Nothing is more tasty than spreading a decent helping of butter on toast or a biscuit right out of the oven. Back in the day butter was frowned upon because it was high in saturated fat. However, recent studies have concluded that there has been no connection to high saturated fat and cardiovascular diseases. The butter alternatives including margarine and other oil spreads has been found to be way more harmful to our bodies than butter.
- Potatoes: Boiled, mashed, baked or fried, everyone can say that potatoes taste delicious now matter how they are served. It wasn’t always the case as they were vilified for being high in carbs are starch; hence, a high source of sugar. Now they are praised for being an excellent source of potassium and fiber. They won’t cause your blood sugar to spike either, and are a good source of glucose for your brain as your brain needs a healthy dose of glucose to function.
Our bodies need a certain amount of all vitamins and minerals and healthy fats and sugars but sometimes we don’t know what fruits or veggies or grains contain or what they are good for. I have added a link to my menu titled Nutrition Dictionary. It will be an ongoing list but it will show you what nutrients are in each food, its health benefits and some interesting facts. I hope this helps to further educate you in cleaner eating and, more importantly, cleaner living!
